Note that we generally do not track FKTs set in races, since the race websites do that. The (supported) FKT currently set going uphill as that's the direction the annual race here is run. There is a race on this route called the Ghost Town Trail Challenge. It's called the Ghost Town Trail because while it does go through some existing towns, it also passes by what remains of various "ghost towns" - towns that sprung up to produce coal but eventually were abandoned once mined out.
